going from vegetarian to raw food only?

I've been a vegetarian for about six years and I'm really considering going on a diet of only raw foods because I've heard that makes you feel good. my question is What if I go I can eat raw, fruits and vegetables? "I can eat rice and lentils and bread please give me ideas! Much appreciated:)

Do not go vegetarian a raw foodist. Go from vegan vegetarian. Then ranging from vegan to raw foodist. It is too much of a drastic change. Trust me, I've been a vegetarian for 10 years vegan for two years, and am in transition to raw foodist although it is difficult to take it easy. I hope it works out!

Raw Foodist seeking best Dehydrator?

Hi Im preparing to become completely raw and I want to make a one time investment on the best dehydrator.. Id be preparing meals for 2 people but Ill also be entertaining quite abit for up to 5 extra quest and possible more around holidays.. I was looking at the excalibur 3900 but without the proper knowledge of dehydrators Im scared to spend that much money.. I also came across Vegikiln 8 tray dehydrator, which has a more friendly price and seems to be the same as the excalibur.. but now Im wondering how I make raw bread loafs in these dehydrators since theres not enough room between trays and the trays double as the door so you need all of them in.. So my question is what is the best dehydrator for me to make ALL raw foods and for 2-10 people?

Excalibur are typically thought to be the best dehydrators. They have horizontal air flow, which most people like versus vertical dehydrators. VegiKiln is a newer brand that also has a horizontal design. The below link has a comparison chart of the Excalibur versus VegiKiln, but in general, the Excalibur has larger drying trays and larger fans (which makes drying faster), The VegiKilns are less expensive but do not have the brand of Excalibur.

Low carb sugarless desserts and possibly raw food?

I am dieting and I have lost a lot of wieght but I decided that I want to make a little sweet. Anyone have any low carb sugarless dessert recipes to share? They can also be raw foods if you have any or any sites. Thanks.
I know that almond can be used as a crust for many desserts. Any ideas for using them?
Yes, but artificial sweeteners are actually worse for you.

most berries are very low carb, so go for those. Buy frozen berries w/ no added sugar, dump some into a bowl, top w/ a packet of Splenda and some whipping cream. Stir well. Sort of like fruit-flavored ice cream. The fruit will freeze the cream. Mmm!

Thinking about doing the raw diet for my cat?

I love my cat and I want whats best for her, but I am so confused n what to do regarding food.

We’ve had her just about a month.. before that, I hadnt had a cat in over 5 years.. and back then, I didnt know that by products and animal digests were unsafe.. hell I ate by product hot dogs all of the time, so I didnt know.

My new cat had been eating dry crap from walmart, and she refuses to eat any felidae or blue spa dry.. i tried weening her off her junk, but her personality has changed a bit and she seemed depressed. And she hardly touches the healthy dry.

She LOVES canned food called evolve, which list no junk. BUT they come in tinytiny cans, and this is an overweigh cat.. one tiny can even on a healthy sized cat may not be enough. Shouldnt she have some dry out too?

If not, I dont think that tny sized can is enough for one day, and the cost is ridiculous.. do you think it might be a little cheaper to do a raw diet for her?

As for portion sizes, I do canned food – Felidae is one of the brands I feed mine, so we are on the same page as far as quality goes – and to maintain my indoor cats at their 9 and 10 pound optimal weights, I feed the male about a 1/3 of a 6 oz. can, and the female gets about 1/4 of a can twice a day. In general, I do not leave dry food out, but they do get it as an occasional treat, in addition to the canned food. When I notice them begging for food right after they have polished off their meals, then I will increase their portions a little bit – either by having them split a 1/4 cup of Felidae dry, or by giving them each a half a can of canned food. I notice they seem to need extra portions in the fall, when they are growing their winter coats, and also putting on a little winter weight. So I would guess that those little cans are just right for a single meal. Your cat is probably addicted to the carbs in the cheaper food – I know my male cat was. It took time, but he did adjust, and he is now a ten year old with a coat that is shinier and softer than ever before, and who still chases his tail like a kitten.

What vegetbales, or cooking techniques, I should try?

I'm trying to eat healthier, but I am friends with lots of vegetables / fruits (VERY discerning diner.) Do not want to be like, but I can not seem to find things I like. I have curiosity about fruits or vegetables that may have a flavor similar to the one I like and, or any good advice that will help me in finding food you enjoy! What I eat: white potatoes, carrots when cooked in soup, apples, bananas and oranges. I tried and do not like: raw, peaches premium (Ataulfo mango), lettuce, raw onion things cooked tomatoes, melons, raw, raw and cooked pumpkin, watermelon, strawberries, peppers .. I'm split on whether I like pineapple and grapes .. have had where I wanted, and I have been in love. Vegetables **

Since you like potatoes and apples, you'll like jicama. It is a root vegetable that are normally associated with Mexico food. Since you like carrots, you'll like parsnips. They look like white carrots but are much sweeter. You can add to a stew or cooked and mashed mashed potatoes. Have you tired peas? Both are sweet and most of those who not like vegetables like them. Although not as sweet, very early English (green) peas are very good, too. Since you like apples, it is likely that as pears. They have the consistency and taste similar. Because, like oranges, you may as mandarins, tangerines, clementines, blood oranges, ugli (or ugly) fruit and tangelo. You may like grapefruit with sugar (or a substitute such as Splenda) or salt. Try frozen white grape and eaten as a snack. Not as many types of tomatoes and lettuce could not have tried them all. Iceberg lettuce is less offensive and Boston. tomatoes have fewer seeds than most other tomatoes. Sometimes people do not like tomatoes really object to seed more than anything. Try to Rome. It is easy to reach the seeds. Many people do not like onions, so it is not unusual. Many do not mind the taste the onion (green onion). Some people only like the top, while others only like the background. Worth a try, because it adds variety to your palate. You do not mention corn. It is tasty and can be used in many ways. It is also sweet. roasted corn on the cob is a wonderful summer gift. Bananas are version with banana starch. They are often made in chips. Fresh pineapple is a real pleasure. Try it. You may find you like nuts. Drying intensifies the sweetness.

IBS sufferers—do any of you have trouble with soda pop?

I was diagnosed with IBS, and the only thing that really causes my symptoms thus far, seems to be soda pop, specifically Coca-cola. Funny thing is, I can tolerate spicy, barbecued chicken, mexican food, dairy, raw veggies…but the minute I drink the pop—I can countdown 10 min. to the toilet. Is anyone else sensitive to pop?

I never drink sodas, so I’m not sure. But, dairy…wow! If I eat ice cream, or milk based soups, look out and clear that bathroom. Within minutes I have really bad cramping and explosive diarrhea. Spicy foods don’t bother me either. Different foods are triggers. A big meal also sends me scampering to the bathroom. I’m better eating smaller meals, but who can do that when you’re hungry. You will gradually find out what you can tolerate. Good luck.

Questions about raw food diets…?

Do raw food diets mean just eating meat and vegetables raw, or would you actually avoid things like rice and bread that have to be cooked?
Are there meats other than fish that can be (safely) eaten raw?

Raw food diets are a lot more complex than just eating raw fruits and vegetables. The idea is to avoid eating cooked food, so rice would be sprouted rather than boiled and breads would be made from sprouted grains and then heated (under 130 F) in a dehydrator.

As for meat, I wouldn’t advise eating meat raw, although there are some raw foodists who do (it’s very rare). If you must try it, go for organic meat, very fresh and avoid things like pork. If you search through the raw food sites, you will find some ground rules for raw meat eating. I’ve never done it myself.

Otherwise, if you check out David Wolfe’s work and look at raw food sites, you will get lots of ideas for recipes. My favourite raw food recipe book is Juliano’s “Raw the Uncook Book” but there are many others.

Chicken fajita recipe, already cooked the chicken?

HI, we have already cooked the chicken because we weren’t sure what we were going to make with it yet. Does anyone have a recipe that uses chicken, some kind of taco seasoning, we also have onions, bell peppers, and mushrooms, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, tortillas. The thing is, i am just not sure how to mix the chicken in with the sauteed peppers/onions etc, while adding in some Mexican food seasoning. Do i need some kind of liquid? The recipes i find online are all with raw chicken. Thank you! Your help is appreciated. =)

Since your chicken is already cooked, I would cook the veggies in a little oil (onions, bell peppers and mushrooms) and when they are tender-crisp, I would add the seasoning and a little water – not much – give it a stir, and then add the cooked chicken and stir again to coat and heat. I believe there is a little cornstarch in the Fajita seasoning packet that needs some liquid to help it thicken.

If you get a little too much water, just cook it off a little. But try not to overcook your veggies.

That should do it for you.

Craving Certain Foods, why?

There are times I crave to eat spinach and someone told me that I probably have an iron deficiency and my body is craving it. If that is so, why are there times I crave raw mushrooms or, at one time, anything with vinegar? Is there an article about this? (note: I am not pregnant unless it is by the Holy Ghost)

If you are anemic, it is nothing serious. I wouldn’t worry about it. I crave salads sometimes and other times chocolate. It just depends on your body. If you crave something bad, your body is actually asking for nutrients, and when you feed it the chocolate or chips you feel hungry yet again because you didn’t satisfy your body with nutrient rich foods.

The best way to gradually "work" in the raw food diet?

So I heard about the raw diet for several years, at first I thought the guy who told me that was crazy, but the idea never left of my mind ... after years of feeling miserable and several months of considering it, go premium for life seems to be the answer to many of the difficulties I have. Anyway, I am very excited to start, however I do not know exactly how. Cut the food you eat normally and go directly to raw foods, I would probably have body goes into shock, I guess ... Before my decision, I have become more healthy this year, no soda or fast food (once a month, if that), and almost never eat meat (again, with one or two times a month). So I can not imagine it would be too difficult, but I start with raw nuts or other snacks or specific meals in first? I read most of 'Raw Food Energy Life Force ", which is great, but looking for more experiences personal ... thanks!

I probably first replace my snacks with raw vegetables like celery, cherry tomatoes or baby carrots. I also want to replace a snack with fruit as well. Fruit salad can be eaten as a side dish / dessert, depending on the amount of a sweet tooth has. Sometimes, when I have enough time to breakfast, I just grab an apple / banana, because they are ready to eat and always available. At first it may seem difficult, so there would always be a plate with raw food, like a salad.

Is home made raw BARF food the same as pre bought raw BARF food?

It’s Dr Ian Billinghursts blend that he sells here are the ingredients.
Chicken, finely ground chicken bone, beef liver, whole egg, cultured kefir, seasonal vegetables selected from broccoli, celery, spinach, carrot, ground flax seed, bok choy, dried alfalfa leaf powder, beef kidney, beef heart, unbleached beef tripe, seasonal fruit selected from apple, pear, grapefruit, orange, dried kelp powder, garlic, capsicum.
Does it sound alright to feed to my puppy, he prefers it to homemade BARF but I’m not sure.

It sounds to be a good healthy diet. The ingredient list is good.

I’m sure Dr Billinghurst does prefer to sell his product instead of you making your own BARF. He doesn’t make one cent of profit if you make your own.

Vegan going to be a raw vegan for one week.. help please?

okay! i’m a vegan and i’ve been one for about one year now. my friend wanted to see what it was like for a week to be vegan so shes starting tomorrow(monday). know since she’s doing something out of her box i thought i will too. for one week, starting from tomorrow i want to be a RAW VEGAN.
pleas help me come up with things i can eat.. ( i know this sounds silly, but really raw vegans seem so much different then regular vegans). when coming up with food suggestions keep these factors in mind.
- I go to school. (i usually have a green tea, peanut butter/jelly sandwich, almonds, craisons)
- the rest of my family aren’t vegans. but i’m very good at cooking. ( i want to own my own cafe)
- i do have this raw vegan desert cook book called “amy’s raw deserts”
- i don’t want to go out and buy a million different supplements.

any help?

I would suggest using raw vegetables, fruits, and grains, such as wheat and legumes.ix them up into stir fries.

Many raw foodists maintain the “raw” label as long as they consume more than 75% of their diet from raw foods. Also, heating up food is also considered raw.

can you give me a list of all raw foods

i have bin doing it for awhile i just what to know all my options

If you get a dehydrater you can make all sorts of goodies like cookies, chips, granola, ect.

Here’s my list of random raw things I eat:
nuts like pecans, sunflower seeds, almonds, ect
Apples
oranges
grapes
raw caoco (chocolate)
agave nectar (like honey but from a plant)
granola (its super east and delish to make you own just google raw granola for recipes)
health stores carry alot of raw things like food bars, crackers, flat breads, ect

when eating raw there are alot more opitions than you’d think there are. Sometimes you just have to look outside the box to find them. Its definently an adventure!

How much money for a trip to NYC?

Alright, so I’m heading down to NYC for a week ( 4 days / 5 nights) in August here.
We will be driving down. I am wondering how much money is a good amount to have?
I have already paid for the hotel/food/travel expenses…
I’m talkin’ about pure spending money.

I’m mainly interested in G-Star RAW t-shirts & jeans, Abercrombie & Fitch, Hollister etc.
I’m thinking around maybe 2 pairs of G-Star Jeans, maybe 7 or so T-Shirts from all the stores in total, and then possibly a new NYC fitted cap.

I’m a photographer so my photos will be my souvenirs, I’m just tryna’ get a good amount of money to bring to spend on some clothes that are only available in the US.

Is about $1200 a solid amount?

Twelve hundred dollar is enough for a 4 days/5 nights trip to the Big Apple. You could set aside about $500 for the trip and and remaining $700 for shopping.

Now in regards to the $500 for the trip. It is recommended that you have a daily budget of $100 to cover expenses such as visiting attractions, etc. You may have something left over at the end of the day, but it is better to have enough with you rather than running short and having a miserable vacation.

In regards to the remaining $700. That could be use for shopping. Although, there is no sales tax on clothing and shoes under $110, its better to have some extra cash in your hand.

In regards to driving into the city. I would highly not recommend it. That’s because parking in NYC is tough to find and driving around can be a royal pain. Beside, New York City has a very extensive public transit system, so a car in not recommended.

I would recommend parking out of the city and take the train into the city. Depending on where you’re coming from, here are a few places that is with easy commuting distance from Manhattan.

From Upstate New York, New England and Canada

Once in the city, you can take the subway to get around. The fare on the subway is $2.25, however, since you’re in town for 4 days, it is recommend that you purchase an unlimited ride MetroCard for each day your in town. The 1-day Fun Pass unlimited ride MetroCard will cost you $8.25 per card, per day ($33 for four cards each). The 1-day Fun Pass will give you unlimited travel anywhere in the five boroughs of New York City for one price. It also a huge money saver.

FRESNO, Calif. – Glenn Anderson decided to make a change when he followed in his father’s footsteps by growing almonds near the Central Valley town of Hilmar — he stopped using pesticides and pasteurizing the nuts.

He said it’s paid off in happy customers and sold-out harvests, but Anderson, 76, said he fears federal regulations could ruin his business selling raw, organic almonds. He’s hopeful an effort by a dozen California almond growers and retailers to challenge the U.S. Department of Agriculture over its rules will succeed.

Raw Foods Diet accepted by health canada?

Is the raw foods diet accepted by Health Canada?…

a reference for the answer (as in a website link, etc.) would b nice.. but if not u could just tell me whether it is or not…

I have looked at the website before and I know that they accept vegan diets as being healthy and acceptable, but I don’t recall any mention about raw foods diets.

Health Canada’s Eating Well Food Guide explains that people should get between 6 and 8 servings of grains each day. Raw Food diets usually use little to no grains, so this may be conflicting. Also, the food guide recommends getting dairy alternatives (presumably vitamin-enriched) so that’s something that is not considered raw either.

Anyone try the Raw Food Diet?

I have been reading about the benefits of the raw food diet, and that it gives you more energy and better skin.

However, there are vitamin deficits of b12 and calcium. Can you supplement vitamins to take the place of the vitamins you aren’t getting?

Anyone have anything good or bad to say that have tried it?

I love eating raw. I try to do it most of the time.
I switched to a vegan diet about 6 months ago and I have lost weight, my skin is doing better and I do have have lots of energy. I sort of stumbled into eating a vegan diet by accident.
I wanted to do a detox diet so I bought the book. The Raw food detox diet by Natalia Rose and planned to try it for a full month. Once I started I loved it. It quickly became a lifestyle. I lost about 10lbs after about 3 months and have an overall feeling of well being. I like her approach to the raw food diet, its not all or nothing its different levels of the raw food diet that fits your lifestyle and food preference. The Rose plans suggest eating raw till dinner, then having a cooked dinner. I like her way of easing yourself into a healthier approach and outlook to diet in general, it really kept me motivated and positive about the whole thing.

You can get all the vitamins and nutrients you need from fruits, veggies, nuts and grains. I plan to go back to eating meat on occasion but at the moment I don’t really miss it.
My suggestion, do a little research and devise a plan that works best for your food preferences and your life style.

What kinds of food CAN’T you microwave to cook???

I’m not talking about re-heating meals.

I’m talking about cooking the ingrediants for the first time. For the looongest time, I thought you HAD to boil noodles in order to make them bendable (probably because I’ve never seen anyone do it any other way in my family). Well, go figure – I learned you can just microwave them in water.
Same for many other foods. I can’t think of many off the top of my head, but rice is another one.

I’m wondering about RAW BEEF AND OTHER MEATS specifically, but would like to hear input on all foods. Remember, I’m wondering about first-time-cooking preparation…NOT re-heating meals.

And I’m more concerned about health/safety and durability (the food won’t fall apart or be mushy when otherwise it should be solid, or visa-versa), as opposed to taste, as I’m aware cooking over an open flame always gives better taste.
This is gonna be tough to choose a best answer….

Nothing would be unhealthy or unsafe cooked in a microwave. However, meats would be tough and dry, eggs would be rubbery, most baked goods will be hard and dry, etc. But all would be “safe”.

People are saying they feed they’re cats raw foods, but don’t they…?

pick up parasites from eating that?

I was always told not to feed raw because they get hookwaorms, tapeworms, etc. from that. I’m confused here, lol.

What do you all mean by “raw” and what types?
Shadow, yes, that’s my thinking as well. I’m just tired of losing pets due to bad food and recalls. Looking for a guaranteed safe alternative to the gamble shopping of pet foods. I want something that’s guaranteed to be safe. We lost a cat the other day, 2nd one in 1 1/2 years due to recalled food.
I don’t like the idea of feeding raw meat either, but I’d asked a question earlier and everyone was saying to feed raw, so that’s why I’m asking this question.

Here is something from www.rawfed.com talking about dogs, but it’s the same for cats:

Myth: MY DOG WILL ACQUIRE PARASITES FROM THE RAW MEAT IN A RAW DIET.

Yes, there can be parasites in raw meat. But if you are getting meaty bones and carcasses from places fit for human consumption, the parasite factor is negligible. Most parasites are a non-issue and can be safely dealt with by your dog if it is healthy.

The parasite issue is something that non-raw folk use as a scare tactic, telling you that your dog is going to die if it eats raw meat because it will get a weird parasite. They neglect to tell you the very low incidence of these parasites in meat deemed safe for human consumption; nor do they tell you the most “deadly” of these parasites come from things like infected sheep placentas or stillborn calves. Simple solution—do not feed those things to your dog. If the dog looks like it has parasites, simply get a stool sample or blood sample taken. A dog can be wormed holistically or allopathically (the chemical insecticide dewormers). But generally speaking, if your dog has a healthy immune system, it can deal with the parasites before they even get a chance to establish themselves. Parasites hate a very healthy host.

Freezing meat can help kill many parasites (such as the parasite present in salmon that CAN cause a deadly disease in dogs; freezing fresh raw salmon, steelhead, trout, and other salmonids for at least 24 hours before feeding effectively disposes of the parasite. Cooked salmon does not carry the parasite.). As long as one exercises caution in obtaining their meat, parasites are a non-issue. If feeding fresh salmonids or wild game, it is recommended that the meat be deep frozen for at least 24 hours before feeding for salmonids and one month for wild game.

Do not give in to the bacteria and parasite scare tactics. The suggestion of cooking your dog’s food is actually quite harmful! It is the cooked food that causes problems with the dog’s digestive system and that can result in the nutritional deficiencies vets claim they see from raw diets (in reality, most of these nutritional deficiencies arise primarily from home-cooked diets, since cooking destroys many valuable nutrients.).

Small, whole prey critters with small, edible bones, such as mice, rats, quail, rabbits, chicks, small fish and game hens are consumed in their entirety by most experienced raw fed cats. Many cats are also able to strip the meat off of some of the bigger, inedible bones of other larger critters, like chickens, turkeys, ducklings, lamb or pork. Both crunching the smaller bones, as well as stripping the meat and connective tissue off larger ones, are key to promoting the good oral health of your cat, which is one of the greatest benefits of feeding a prey model diet.

Plenty of fresh, juicy raw muscle meat, combined with some edible bone and a bit of organ meat round out the prey model diet. The only other requirement, (to make up for the Omega 3 fatty acid deficiencies in grain fed meats) is the inclusion of some oily fleshed fish, and/or some pastured or grass fed meats, or some fish body oil, which are all rich in O 3’s.

Just remember to always refer back to and use the following approximate proportions of body parts as a basic guideline when assembling your cat’s diet:

5-10% ~ organ meat, with half that amount being liver

10-15% ~ edible bone

80% + ~ muscle meat, fat, skin, connective tissue, etc.

I feed my cats (and ferrets… they’re carnivores too) as much variety as I can find. Chicken, turkey, quail, duck, pork, beef, lamb, rabbit just to name a few common meals. They are the happiest, healthiest animals you’ll ever see.

Raw Food Recipes for a dog with severe itchy skin?

I recently wrote about my 9 years. Shitzu old with severe dry itchy skin. He has injuries which bites and he is losing hair, I ran out of options now. I do not want to renounce it and put it down, and after my last question, I received many great responses. I decided to sequences without my dog. I've been researching it and know I have to gradually introduce this food to him, however I would like suggestions on what to feed. Tomorrow will be his first food in this way, so that any raw food for a dog with chronic itchy skin would be awesome! Also, some advice to the introduction of food, and exactly how to prepare food for me a bit:) thanks in advance to all!

I would start your dog in the chicken. Perhaps the thighs, a division of the breast bone. He should get 2-3% of their ideal body weight per day. Transfer the chicken for a couple of weeks and then slowly add in some chicken liver. You want to add new foods gradually and one at the time of your dog, just to make sure that does not have an allergy to a protein. For example, if you start adding the meat of your dog starts to get itchy again, leave the beef. Wait a couple of weeks, try again, if the dog bites again then do not eat meat. You want to work for you to feed a variety of foods. My own dogs eat chicken, pork, beef, rabbit, Venison, lamb and other "exotic meats" such as I can get. Variety is important in this diet, but many dogs need to be able to work for eating a variety. 80/10/10 Shot of a relationship. 80% of muscle meat, bone 10%, 10% on average which bodies is the liver.
