Thinking about doing the raw diet for my cat?

I love my cat and I want whats best for her, but I am so confused n what to do regarding food.

We’ve had her just about a month.. before that, I hadnt had a cat in over 5 years.. and back then, I didnt know that by products and animal digests were unsafe.. hell I ate by product hot dogs all of the time, so I didnt know.

My new cat had been eating dry crap from walmart, and she refuses to eat any felidae or blue spa dry.. i tried weening her off her junk, but her personality has changed a bit and she seemed depressed. And she hardly touches the healthy dry.

She LOVES canned food called evolve, which list no junk. BUT they come in tinytiny cans, and this is an overweigh cat.. one tiny can even on a healthy sized cat may not be enough. Shouldnt she have some dry out too?

If not, I dont think that tny sized can is enough for one day, and the cost is ridiculous.. do you think it might be a little cheaper to do a raw diet for her?
I just want her healthy and at a normal size to

As for portion sizes, I do canned food – Felidae is one of the brands I feed mine, so we are on the same page as far as quality goes – and to maintain my indoor cats at their 9 and 10 pound optimal weights, I feed the male about a 1/3 of a 6 oz. can, and the female gets about 1/4 of a can twice a day. In general, I do not leave dry food out, but they do get it as an occasional treat, in addition to the canned food. When I notice them begging for food right after they have polished off their meals, then I will increase their portions a little bit – either by having them split a 1/4 cup of Felidae dry, or by giving them each a half a can of canned food. I notice they seem to need extra portions in the fall, when they are growing their winter coats, and also putting on a little winter weight. So I would guess that those little cans are just right for a single meal. Your cat is probably addicted to the carbs in the cheaper food – I know my male cat was. It took time, but he did adjust, and he is now a ten year old with a coat that is shinier and softer than ever before, and who still chases his tail like a kitten.

I don’t know much about raw feeding, but this link may help you: http://alter-idem.smartmonkey.org/cats/whatifeed.htm And also there are a lot of threads in this forum that might help: http://catfood.tribe.net

Questions about raw food diets…?

Do raw food diets mean just eating meat and vegetables raw, or would you actually avoid things like rice and bread that have to be cooked?
Are there meats other than fish that can be (safely) eaten raw?

Raw food diets are a lot more complex than just eating raw fruits and vegetables. The idea is to avoid eating cooked food, so rice would be sprouted rather than boiled and breads would be made from sprouted grains and then heated (under 130 F) in a dehydrator.

As for meat, I wouldn’t advise eating meat raw, although there are some raw foodists who do (it’s very rare). If you must try it, go for organic meat, very fresh and avoid things like pork. If you search through the raw food sites, you will find some ground rules for raw meat eating. I’ve never done it myself.

This site will give you an idea of vegetarian and vegan raw food diets:

http://www.living-foods.com/

Otherwise, if you check out David Wolfe’s work and look at raw food sites, you will get lots of ideas for recipes. My favourite raw food recipe book is Juliano’s “Raw the Uncook Book” but there are many others.

Enjoy.

Craving Certain Foods, why?

There are times I crave to eat spinach and someone told me that I probably have an iron deficiency and my body is craving it. If that is so, why are there times I crave raw mushrooms or, at one time, anything with vinegar? Is there an article about this? (note: I am not pregnant unless it is by the Holy Ghost)

If you are anemic, it is nothing serious. I wouldn’t worry about it. I crave salads sometimes and other times chocolate. It just depends on your body. If you crave something bad, your body is actually asking for nutrients, and when you feed it the chocolate or chips you feel hungry yet again because you didn’t satisfy your body with nutrient rich foods.

connection between raw food and depression?

lately i’ve been eating a predominantly raw food diet (green smoothies , fruit ) not necessarily to beat my mild depression . I swear I feel great . I feel happier and more confident .Is there a connection between raw food and depression?

the raw fruit and veg will give you a higher percentage of vitamins, minerals, flavenoids, etc.

so there might will be a linking or causative factor.

Raw Foods Diet accepted by health canada?

Is the raw foods diet accepted by Health Canada?…

a reference for the answer (as in a website link, etc.) would b nice.. but if not u could just tell me whether it is or not…

Thanks.

I have looked at the website before and I know that they accept vegan diets as being healthy and acceptable, but I don’t recall any mention about raw foods diets.

Health Canada’s Eating Well Food Guide explains that people should get between 6 and 8 servings of grains each day. Raw Food diets usually use little to no grains, so this may be conflicting. Also, the food guide recommends getting dairy alternatives (presumably vitamin-enriched) so that’s something that is not considered raw either.

raw food vitamin b12

Anyone try the Raw Food Diet?

I have been reading about the benefits of the raw food diet, and that it gives you more energy and better skin.

However, there are vitamin deficits of b12 and calcium. Can you supplement vitamins to take the place of the vitamins you aren’t getting?

Anyone have anything good or bad to say that have tried it?

I love eating raw. I try to do it most of the time.
I switched to a vegan diet about 6 months ago and I have lost weight, my skin is doing better and I do have have lots of energy. I sort of stumbled into eating a vegan diet by accident.
I wanted to do a detox diet so I bought the book. The Raw food detox diet by Natalia Rose and planned to try it for a full month. Once I started I loved it. It quickly became a lifestyle. I lost about 10lbs after about 3 months and have an overall feeling of well being. I like her approach to the raw food diet, its not all or nothing its different levels of the raw food diet that fits your lifestyle and food preference. The Rose plans suggest eating raw till dinner, then having a cooked dinner. I like her way of easing yourself into a healthier approach and outlook to diet in general, it really kept me motivated and positive about the whole thing.

You can get all the vitamins and nutrients you need from fruits, veggies, nuts and grains. I plan to go back to eating meat on occasion but at the moment I don’t really miss it.
My suggestion, do a little research and devise a plan that works best for your food preferences and your life style.

Good Luck

raw food parasites

raw food parasites
People are saying they feed they’re cats raw foods, but don’t they…?

pick up parasites from eating that?

I was always told not to feed raw because they get hookwaorms, tapeworms, etc. from that. I’m confused here, lol.

What do you all mean by “raw” and what types?
Shadow, yes, that’s my thinking as well. I’m just tired of losing pets due to bad food and recalls. Looking for a guaranteed safe alternative to the gamble shopping of pet foods. I want something that’s guaranteed to be safe. We lost a cat the other day, 2nd one in 1 1/2 years due to recalled food.
I don’t like the idea of feeding raw meat either, but I’d asked a question earlier and everyone was saying to feed raw, so that’s why I’m asking this question.

Here is something from www.rawfed.com talking about dogs, but it’s the same for cats:

Myth: MY DOG WILL ACQUIRE PARASITES FROM THE RAW MEAT IN A RAW DIET.

Yes, there can be parasites in raw meat. But if you are getting meaty bones and carcasses from places fit for human consumption, the parasite factor is negligible. Most parasites are a non-issue and can be safely dealt with by your dog if it is healthy.

The parasite issue is something that non-raw folk use as a scare tactic, telling you that your dog is going to die if it eats raw meat because it will get a weird parasite. They neglect to tell you the very low incidence of these parasites in meat deemed safe for human consumption; nor do they tell you the most “deadly” of these parasites come from things like infected sheep placentas or stillborn calves. Simple solution—do not feed those things to your dog. If the dog looks like it has parasites, simply get a stool sample or blood sample taken. A dog can be wormed holistically or allopathically (the chemical insecticide dewormers). But generally speaking, if your dog has a healthy immune system, it can deal with the parasites before they even get a chance to establish themselves. Parasites hate a very healthy host.

Freezing meat can help kill many parasites (such as the parasite present in salmon that CAN cause a deadly disease in dogs; freezing fresh raw salmon, steelhead, trout, and other salmonids for at least 24 hours before feeding effectively disposes of the parasite. Cooked salmon does not carry the parasite.). As long as one exercises caution in obtaining their meat, parasites are a non-issue. If feeding fresh salmonids or wild game, it is recommended that the meat be deep frozen for at least 24 hours before feeding for salmonids and one month for wild game.

Do not give in to the bacteria and parasite scare tactics. The suggestion of cooking your dog’s food is actually quite harmful! It is the cooked food that causes problems with the dog’s digestive system and that can result in the nutritional deficiencies vets claim they see from raw diets (in reality, most of these nutritional deficiencies arise primarily from home-cooked diets, since cooking destroys many valuable nutrients.).

Here is a snippet from http://www.rawfedcats.org/ about what to feed:

Small, whole prey critters with small, edible bones, such as mice, rats, quail, rabbits, chicks, small fish and game hens are consumed in their entirety by most experienced raw fed cats. Many cats are also able to strip the meat off of some of the bigger, inedible bones of other larger critters, like chickens, turkeys, ducklings, lamb or pork. Both crunching the smaller bones, as well as stripping the meat and connective tissue off larger ones, are key to promoting the good oral health of your cat, which is one of the greatest benefits of feeding a prey model diet.

Plenty of fresh, juicy raw muscle meat, combined with some edible bone and a bit of organ meat round out the prey model diet. The only other requirement, (to make up for the Omega 3 fatty acid deficiencies in grain fed meats) is the inclusion of some oily fleshed fish, and/or some pastured or grass fed meats, or some fish body oil, which are all rich in O 3’s.

Just remember to always refer back to and use the following approximate proportions of body parts as a basic guideline when assembling your cat’s diet:

5-10% ~ organ meat, with half that amount being liver

10-15% ~ edible bone

80% + ~ muscle meat, fat, skin, connective tissue, etc.

I feed my cats (and ferrets… they’re carnivores too) as much variety as I can find. Chicken, turkey, quail, duck, pork, beef, lamb, rabbit just to name a few common meals. They are the happiest, healthiest animals you’ll ever see.

What should i do about my stepdaughter?

She is nearly 2 years old and lives with her mum, however when we have her for the weekend/week she turns up red raw from wearing wet nappies and smells really bad as if she has not had a wash for weeks, her hair is always matted with food and she is always really constipated. Sh usually has a bottle with her that stinks of old milk and is usually covered in old milk residue. I think she should be reported to the social services but me and her dad are concerned that they may take her into care, her mother also has a 3 year old who she does not see as her boyfriend soes not let her. i am tempted just to keep the little girl with us and not send her back to her mum but what would the police have to say about it? Please help am desparate now
yes my fiance is the girls biological dad and the mum has residency order but they have joint custody

this is avery delicate & difficult situation, you have found yourselve’s in, the first thing i would do is take her to see a doctor, explain the situation & have her checked over, if the doctor feel’s that there are signs of neglect, they have the power, to report it, plus you have there back up that you cared enough to get her checked, then your boyfriend should see a lawyer, about gaining full custody, if you are both in agreement. I know this might sound daft, but why don’t you ask her mum if she would like you to have her for a few weeks to give her a break, you will then know she’s being well looked after, with you & you are putting your plan of action together, perhaps if you don’t already know the fact’s behind her first child being kept away from her this will go in your favour. You are a wonderful girlfriend, who in my opinion would make a great mum to her forget the step bit good luck, x

how much weight you will lose if I keep this for 2 weeks?

raw food breakfast bar Nakd 140-70 CAL-lunch cappuccino chemical skinny innocent veg pot 255-290 chemical-chemical-brown apple snack 45-100 frappuccino organic light pasta dinner with eggplant, tomato, a little olive oil and either lean beef 5% or a can of tuna in spring water - 335 snack chemical for anywhere between choc bar - 200-250 chemicals anywhere between 11145-1230 cals regular exercise and I am somewhat less in height 5-6, 129 pounds and 17 want to lose 15 pounds. I still be healthy so do not say otherwise.

First of all that is around 1250 calories. Secondly NOT an apple has 45 calories, is about 80 calories. Coffee and cappucinos are very unhealthy. Pasta is a no no for weight loss and why eating a chocolate bar? Anyway, what you plan to eat will probably maintain your weight. A girl of her age and size weight should eat around 1000-1500 calories to maintain weight, not losing. I would recommend eat more vegetables, cut cappucinos, processed food bars, pasta, and chocolate bars and replaced by fresh foods, like fruits and vegetables, chicken breast (Skinless or bread). You do not need to lose weight, but should try to eat healthier foods. Just because you're a good weight does not mean that you are getting the nutrients you need. You asked for an answer, and gave him something that is not going to want to read. You probably will not lose anything to tell the truth. But if you want to hear something nice, but it's not really going to happen, just to make you feel better, "lose 15 pounds in two weeks." But do not be disappointed when it happens.

will raw oatmeal for breakfast make me lose or gain weight?

about every morning i eat 1/2 cup of raw oat meal with 1/4 cup of raisins and i’ll have a cup of milk along with it cuzz i’ll get thirsty. I make my oat meal with water not milk and add no sugar or anything to it. i think it taste good.will this make me lose gain or keep the same weight if i eat this every morning along with eating good healthy amounts of heathly food all month?

That’s a delicious breakfast but you need to add some protein …….. how about grinding up some raw almonds and sprinkling that over it ……. protein will sustain you for longer and make your brain feel better ….. protein rich foods will increase the production of serotonin in your body and put a smile on your dial………. yes you will lose weight if you eat like that…. i would replace the milk with organic rice milk…… milk and dairy are notoriously hard to digest and upset a lot of people’s digestion….. and people don’t realise how much their digestion is being hampered until they actually ditch the milk and dairy for a few days……. if you do discard milk and dairy simply increase your intake of fresh green salad and green vegies…… if you’re eating enough salad and greens you don’t need to worry about getting enough calcium and magnesium.

What is healthier – a raw food diet or a vegan diet? What is more palatable – food or vegan?

I am intolerant lactose. Some raw food recipes I tried were not as good, but the desserts are great though. best websites for tasty and easy meals for vegans and raw materials? Preferably in the recipes and ingredients are classified in Australia.

I'm talking about personal experience, so believe me I used to be vegan at that time I had read so many "proofs" about the benefits of a vegan diet (almost any disease, high energy, good for animals I have read many theories about the vegan diet and almost became an expert thought it would be healtier, happier, etc 6 months beginning the vegan diet: it went from muscular as thin as a toothpick (it seemed he was about to die, according to my parents), no energy whatsoever, without sexual desire, very pale skin, you could see the bones in my face, bad temper, always hungry, no matter how much you ate, gurus, food etc can tell the vegan diet has everything you need, but show strong evidence that you lack protein, calcium, vitamin A, D, and lipid-soluble vitamins, iron (a lot), magnesium, Essential fatty acids (fish only omega 3 and 6, enzymes to help with all chemical reactions in the body and many other things. many people have had serious problems with this diet that I am a person, but girls have misscarriages, stops time, and other things (mentioned above) I know a lot about nutrition and now my health is very good, I'm muscular (I have to play basketball i), always have energy, not tired, no headaches, no physical ailment. secret. i AOnly natural food sources: a large quantity of meat (if nothing satisfies your hunger better than the fish feed, poultry, chicken is low in calories which helps tremendously lose weight while cutting down on carbohydrates that make you gain weight), lots of fruits, 4 cups of green Tean every day, lots of water, basically an omnivorous diet, but not junk food, no sodas, cookies not only natural foods. tribes in Africa eat that way and have no disease at all. so forget about the vegans know alls ANF follow my advice if you are overweight will become normal, too thin and will become normal with this diet, basically, reach your ideal health and how bodyweight.by tried the raw food diet for 3 months this time I almost died. What brand of cranberry juice do you use for UTI?

This is my 3rd UTI in a span of about 3-4 months. I’ve already seen a doctor, got the antibiotics before, taken them~ They went away for a couple of weeks, but would come back. I’ve done some research on antibiotics before & antibiotics just isn’t cutting it for me.

I’m planning to go see a doctor later, but in the meantime, I’ve been drinking cranberry juice & taking lots of Vitamin C pills. I found a brand of cranberry juice at a health food store, but it’s so expensive (about $8 for half a gallon, called “All Cranberry”, or something like that). It actually lessened my UTI, but I wanted to find a cheaper alternative (if possible).

Note: I’m consuming raw garlic (natural antibiotic).
Any juice/brand suggestions?

ok im going to tell you something that you’re going to love me for. i’ve had so many bladder infections just this year. my first one i had was this year and i have been getting them ever since. i finally found something that no one has told me. no doctor. antibiotics just make you more susceptible to uti’s. dont take them. ill tell you exactly what i do… go to wal mart. go to the isle that has all the vitamins and diet stuff. look for cranberry pills. there might be a few different kind like AZO or Nature’s Bounty. don’t get those. what you want is the Spring Valley 1 per day dose super strength cranberry 500 mg. take 3 or 4 at a time. to get rid of it. take 3 or 4 at a time 3 times a day. it wont hurt you. do that for about a week or two and it will go away. if it comes back do the same method. drink a loooot of water. it will take about an hour to actually feel it so if you want get the azo uti relief pills also.
i like to keep one bottle of the vitamins in my car and one at home. just in case it comes back. but that’s the safest, most cheap and best way i have found. i’ve also heard of something called UTI Clear never used it but heard good things.

What to eat in a raw food diet for variety?

I’m not looking to go totally raw food, but definitely want to have more. I know pretty much all the Western veggies and fruit, but what are some good foreign foods that can be eaten raw, and how to prepare them? Also what are good foods to sprout, and how do you do that?

Have you tried “green smoothies”? They are awesome! They are great to incorporate into a raw food diet!

I just started doing my own sprouts. I bought a variety package from wheatgrasskits.com. Get some big mason jars and tops to rinse. Those can be bought there, too, at least the lids with holes.

Your local health food store should have things like dehydrated fruits that you don’t find everyday like goji berries and such. I used to live in Florida and got all the papaya, coconuts, avocados, mangoes, and citrus from friends who had trees. I moved north and sure do miss those. Now I eat lots of apples, pears, cherries, and a variety of berries. I don’t think I’ve ever gotten tired of all the varieties of fruits that you can get at the store.

As far as the greens and veggies, I grow my own garden. Right now I have 7 different greens and different veggies growing. If you don’t have the space, you can grow them in container gardens.

I hope this helps a bit! ; )

My 10 month old and food allergies!

Is very allergic to milk and milk/dairy products. He has severe eczema and can’t have anything with milk products or he breaks out in a horrible, severe rash that he can’t stop scratching at. He was put on Alimentum and it hasn’t done any good..my aunt, who is also lactose intolerant, was reading the ingredients and said that there is milk based products in the Alimentum. So I took him off of formula completely (He will be 11 months this month-Aug.) and put him on Rice milk and his skin has already started clearing up!! My question is–Does anyone have a recipe for homemade Rice milk that is more catered to babies or will any Rice milk recipe do? I have found a few good recipes but wasn’t sure if babies needed added ingredients. He is also eating homemade food..meaning I buy raw fruits and veggies and cook them etc. because the baby food also has added stuff that he is allergic to. Thanks so much for all of your help!

This can indeed relate to your little ones allergies.

The information below is often overlooked or missed by both patients and physicians.

This is the best Allergy info.

Being a nurse with over 25 years experience, I have seen a lot of patients with similar illnesses and disorders.

Many Allergy and Asthma problems are caused from common everyday chemicals and fragranced products as well as VOC’s in homes, schools and workplace.

This is a growing problem for many people and most are not even aware that it exists as more and more chemicals are being introduced and used on a daily basis.

Many people believe that because a product smells good or cleans well and it is on a store shelf that it is tested, approved and safe for use.
Think again !

We are now seeing more and more children and adults with skin disorders, nausea, Allergies, Headaches, Sinusitis, Migraines, Asthma, Chronic Hives, Eczema, sinus / respiratory illnesses and Hormone related disorders.

I can not emphasize how important it is to educate yourself about the harm you may be doing to your health by using chemicals and fragranced products.

Most doctors will not inform you about this because patients as a whole like to walk out of a doctors office with a prescription for some magical medicine and they do not want to be told that their expensive new perfume or newly installed carpet or fresh house paint may be the culprit. Also, many patients do not want to change their lifestyle to accommodate their new illness. Infact, I have even witnessed patients who increase or take multiple medications for their allergy or asthma just so that they can continue to wear their perfume or use Bounce or Febreeze. The doctor will give patients medications even though often times these meds do not eliminate the problem or often times cause other health problems because they are an added chemical in the body.

Chemicals and fragranced products are often the root of many disorders and illnesses when it comes to your health. Many of the below mentioned items are common triggers to sinus, asthma, itching, headaches, Migraines and allergy problems amongst other health issues. Get rid of them and your immune and respiratory system will thank you and you will breathe easier.

And, it is not only personal body or cleaning products causing havoc on your health….many people become ill after wearing brand new clothing, dry-cleaned clothes, installing new carpet, painting, buying a new mattress or after home renovations because of the Flame Retardants, Antimony, Benzenes, Formaldehydes, etc. used in these products. So the answer is NO, you are not imagining that 2 weeks after your home, office or classroom got renovated you started to become ill, get dizzy or have headaches. This is happening more and more these days and adults as well as children are becoming sicker and sicker.

Unfortunately, too many doctors compound the problem by prescribing chemical medications to try to alleviate the symptoms of an already chemical overloaded body and they rarely tell the patient to eliminate the chemical offenders. How many times have I seen people in the grocery store with Bounce, Glade Plug-Ins and Febreeze in their shopping cart along with a bottle of Benadryl , Migraine Excedrin and a box of Allergy Tablets ? Why don’t they make the connection?

Keep in mind that your skin is the largest organ of your body and what you put on your skin gets absorbed into your body. Then … well… then it has to be filtered by your organs which are already working real hard.

BIG NO-NO’s —- I would SERIOUSLY recommend removing all of the below from your living / working area.

No Bounce or dryer sheets – these are VERY toxic
No Febreeze – your pets will even thank you for this
No Glade Plug-ins – VERY toxic
No drinking of Unfiltered tap water
No Scented candles
No Scented Dish Detergents
No Fragranced Products on Body, Hair or Clothing
No Smoke
No Newspapers and Magazines – The ink is a huge irritant.
No Dander
No Sprays
No Sharpies (marker pens)
New Cartpeting, mattresses, paint, contain toxins that can trigger severe respiratory disorders as well as headaches and Asthma flare-ups.
And remember, it is NOT the smell it is the Chemicals that make up the smell. So, even if something is “Fragrance Free” these products often mask the smell with another chemical ! There are plenty of safe healthy products out there that work well and do not have added chemical fragrances.

More and more workplaces & schools are implementing Fragrance Free policies and creating “Fragrance Free Zones”… why do you think this is? Make the connection, your lungs , immune system and your general health will thank you.

raw food vs cooked food

raw food vs cooked food
DS: Raw VS Homemade VS Premium VS Low quality?

what are your opinions on raw diet homemade food premium kibble and low quality kibble. eg. Prey model, cooked meat and veggies, taste of the wild, purina. which is best for a dog and why?

I’m probably going to get bashed for saying this (no idea why!) but in most cases, raw is best, because it’s what dogs would eat in the wild. They have nearly the same digestive systems as wolves, and wolves eat raw, do they not?

IMO:
Raw ~ Best thing, although some people are unable to feed it. It’s natural and mimics the diet of wild dogs & wolves
Homemade ~ Not very good, hard to balance because the meat is cooked, and a lot of it is veggies, which is completely unnecessary
Premium ~ Good alternative if you can’t feed raw, there are good ingredients in these kibbles, and it’s easy to feed
Low Quality ~ Not saying that some dogs can’t do well on it, but honestly, the ingredients are crap, the only benefit here is that it’s easy to feed

      raw food diet basics

      Raw Food Lifestyle ?!?

      Hola Yahoo! =)

Can anyone on here talk to me about the raw food lifestyle ?
I’m not intrested in a diet, I want to know about the lifestyle.

What does it totally contain ?
What are the basics [beside the total obvious, lol] ?
What does it say about raw fish and raw meat ?
How do you get started ?
How long does it take you to ease into eating only raw ?

Why did you choose to start eating only raw foods ?
Is it really healthier for you ?
Did you think you got healthier or happier from eating raw ?

What are your overall views on the raw food diet as a whole ?

Thank you so much in advanced !!! ^_^

The raw food “lifestyle” is just diet related. There aren’t any ethical obligations or beliefs involved- it’s totally dogma free. Although people who are raw tend to be ecologically concerned and politically liberal, it isn’t part of a credo.

Most people who are raw are raw vegans. In fact, (although I know there are people who do) I’ve never met anyone who ate raw fish and meat as part of a raw diet. When one says “raw” you can assume “raw vegan.”

The majority of people who adopt a raw food diet do so to deal with health problems. Many people have debilitating illnesses like Crohn’s disease or Ulcerative colitis, some have digestive problems like heartburn and reflux, some are fighting obesity, and many are trying to wean themselves off of pharmaceuticals.

I got started when my husband (a doctor) advised two weeks on raw fruits, vegetables and juices to see if it would help my allergies, and the accompanying sinus pain and hives. It did. Over two years later I’m still on it. (Although my cooking has gotten a lot fancier!)

After a month I was shocked at how much energy I had. After six months I realized my eyesight had improved. Gradually I noticed that I couldn’t remember the last time I felt depressed or had a headache!

To get started, I would recommend that you read everything you can find online first. Then I’d get two books: “The Complete Book of Raw Food” by Lori Baird and Julie Rodwell and “Raw Food Made Easy” by Jennifer Cornbleet.

      Grrr Raw Food Diet . . .?

so i am trying to eat healthier, & i think the raw food diet is right for me, but the thing is i still live with my parents [ im a teen ] & they dont support me at all.

The only thing i can eat [ that i kno of ] in this house is salad, pistachios [ maybe. . i have to check to see if they are roasted or anything like that ], tangerines, & bananas.

Does anyone have any easy to make raw food recipes or at least some food ideas next time we go to the grocery store?

      Carrots
      oranges
      broccoli
      cabbage
      mushrooms
      onions
sugar snap peas (my fave for snacking)
      cantalope
      strawberries
      onions
      green onion or scallions
      jicama
      nuts

You could make coleslaw, fruit salad or just munch on any or all of the above. Just browse through the veggie section and just get enough to eat so that nothing goes bad. Good luck.

Raw food diet, Can I get Somenella from kisses?

I just started to feed my two little Bengal Cats a Raw food diet but now I’m a little concerned. My one cat, Sasha, loves to give face kisses. Is it okay to let her lick my face or am I taking a risk to get Somenella? Thank you!!!
Thank you!! Actually I was given a free sample by the local Natural Pet food store. The Brand is called “Wild Kitty” although I have heard good things about “Feline Pride” The idea was to get my other cat to try to enjoy wet food but even with the smelly raw food available she still heads to the dry food bowl =/ It’s a completely different question but any suggestions on getting my little shy cat to try wet food in general? (I’ve only had them for a week so they are still transitioning) Thank you again!! I want to do the right thing for them!

Salmonella is caused by ingestion, so as long as they are not licking your mouth – and you are careful not to put anythng they have licked (such as fingers) into your mouth, the you should be OK.

Obviously you need to be very careful about the surfaces on which you prepare raw food.

If you have chosen a raw diet, please be verysure that you are also feeding the essential supplements that are needed to go with it – or the kittens will become unwelll.

      raw food explained

      raw food explained
      Lemon cooking, please explain?

Ok Im not exactly sure how this works but you can taste raw food mainly fish by using lemon. Somehow the chemical change from the acid ‘cooks’ the meat so u know what it will tase like when you have cooked it. Can anyone explain to me how this works? Does it only work on fish?
Yes it was on a bbc show, he was asking the fishmongers about their fish and he would drip lemon juice on them to taste it for what it would be like cooked.

Acid denatures the proteins in fish (and other meats too)
this is how things like ceviche are made.
usually it is heat that denatures the protein.
the fish will look cooked and the texture will change, but technically it will not be cooked. If you’re the type that really worries about getting sick from contaminated food, that you need to heat it above 140 degrees F.

as far as using lemon to approximate what a finished dish will taste like. Never heard of that and I’ve been cooking professionally for 15 years.
Also, i think it would taste much more lemony that when it’s cooked with heat.

      raw food kibble

Question about dog food.. kibble vs prepackaged frozen raw?

Okay.. so I have a new 8 1/2 week old chihuahua, and he is currently on Orijen kibble. However at the feed store where we buy it, they recently brought in some freezers with raw food and bones. I have heard DIY raw food is awesome for animals, but not too sure about frozen. They carry a brand called Red Dog Blue Cat. Is this going to be full nutrition for my growing puppy?
This is the kind we bought, but haven’t tried yet:
      Chicken & Veggies Meal

Ingredients : Non-medicated, free-range ground chicken meat, organs and bones, organic: green kale, lettuce, zucchini, squash, jewel yams.

And the pup was a gift to me, if it had been up to me I definately would have waited until at least 10 weeks. I got him at 6 1/2, way too young I know.

The raw diet IS great, however you are already feeding a VERY high quality kibble to your new baby. Kudos to you for the great choice :)

I know I didnt answer your question, but I just wanted to commend you for choosing a truly nutritious and good food for your dog. I work at a store where they only sell high quality foods (Orijen, Innova, Taste of the Wild, some frozen raw foods, etc) so I know how important it is to feed your dog.

Also, the grain free aspect is awesome – I know of a lot of chihuahuas having grain allergies.

      Again, kudos to you :)

      raw food lifestyle

      raw food lifestyle

Eating raw food reduces toxin content in your diet, offering enormous health benefits. In particular, raw foodists report weight loss along with dramatic increases of energy and mental clarity. Unfortunately, our world is not wired up for the raw food lifestyle. Very few people are able to switch over to this diet without major lifestyle changes. Fortunately, there is a way to reduce your toxin consumption while eating cooked food. You can do this by making simple modifications to how you cook your food and the order in which you eat it.

      Toxins in cooked food

When you cook food, a number of chemical processes are taking place: chemical bonds are being formed and broken. One of the more important chemical reactions that occurs during the cooking process is called the Maillard reaction. This occurs when a sugar molecule forms a chemical link to a protein. This process occurs most favorably in hot, dry conditions, like in your toaster. In fact, toast turning brown is evidence of the Maillard reaction having taken place. The resulting molecules are called advanced glycation endproducts (or AGEs).

These advanced glycation endproducts are known to play a role in a variety of aging processes and diseases. Diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke, and Alzheimer’s disease have all been shown to be accelerated by these compounds. The mechanism driving this process is increased inflammation. Since aging of the skin is associated with inflammation, reducing advanced glycation endproduct consumption has been shown to improve skin quality as well.

      Reducing toxins when cooking

As Dr Nick Perricone describes in his books on the subject, the best way to reduce the presence of these toxins in your food is to change your cooking techniques. By cooking under low-temperature, moist conditions, your food does not undergo browning and searing processes. The toxins never get a chance to form. So instead of pan-frying your chicken breast, try marinating the meat first, and then poaching in a sauce. The key here is to maintain moisture during the cooking process. By keeping the heat low and the moisture high, toxin-forming side reactions are reduced dramatically.

      Blood sugar toxicity

Sugar is the most powerful toxin in your diet. This substance is probably responsible for more illness in this country than anything else. Even more than tobacco. How? What happens in your body is similar to what I described above in the frying pan. When the blood sugar levels get too high, the sugar molecules start cross-linking to proteins on your cells. These are the same advanced glycation endproduct toxins in the above section. The cell recognizes these sugar-modified proteins and calls up an inflammatory response to deal with the toxic material. This inflammatory response is a fundamental process in aging.

In order to reduce blood sugar toxicity, the key is to avoid blood sugar spikes. Here is another trick from the Perricone diet for avoiding high blood sugar: eat protein and fiber first, then eat carbs and sweets second. When you deliberately shift the order of eating around, you can This way, the protein and fiber slows down the sugar absorption. Blood sugar levels do not go to as high a peak level, and toxin formation is avoided.

To summarize, toxins are present in your food and diet. These toxins arise from the cooking process and also from high blood sugar levels in your system. You can reduce your toxin intake with a couple easy steps:

      1. Cook using moist, low-temperature techniques like poaching and boiling.

      2. Reduce sugar intake in general.

      3. Protein and fat first, carbs second.

You can reduce cooked toxins dramatically by eating raw food. This guide offers an excellent plan for transitioning to raw food. If cooked food is not leaving your life any time soon, I recommend reading about the Perricone diet at http://www.vita-dose.com for more insights into reducing toxin intake.
