Is a raw food diet good for my kitten?

I just got a 7 week old kitten and started him on the regular cat chow. But after visiting a pet food store was persuaded into trying a Raw food diet simular the the BARF diet. He seems to like it but I am conserned about feeding my kitten raw meat! They told me at the pet store that grains were bad for cats because they weren’t able to diggest them. I’m very confused can anyone shed some light?

This is absolutely correct, and GOOD FOR YOU (and your pet store) for considering this.

It sounds as if you’re purchasing a raw food? True raw is really best, but if you’re using something like Nature’s Variety that’s quite good as well.

The reason this is true is because cats are obligate carnivores. That means they are designed to and are required to eat diets high in meat-based proteins. Also high in fat, but not as high as the protein. Any grains they ingest are minor, few and far between – anything that might be found in a mouse’s stomach, but they are not necessary.

In other words, the mouse is the perfect food for cats, and the raw diet attempts to recreate that by providing meat, organs and bones.

I’ve collected a lot of articles that will tell you the same thing in much more detail – but still easy to process.

You can learn more too by joining any or all of the raw food groups on Yahoo.

EDIT: Cats don’t eat raw meat in the wild because they don’t know how to cook as someone suggested. I’ve never heard anything so silly! Cats’ digestive tracts are much shorter than humans. This is why they’re able to eat raw meat and not suffer from the same bacteria humans would if they did the same. That doesn’t mean your cat can eat rotten meat – you still want to take care with it – but it’s much safer for them.

    Raw dog food diet (again)?

Ok i just asked a question about raw dog food diet for my boerboel and i got some rly good answers. But i also own a 3yr old golden retriever who weighs 80lbs that i would like to switch onto this raw food diet. So when you guys were sayin 2-3% of my dog’s ideal body weight what does that mean? and where would i buy organ meat and bone meat? thank you :)
Also i do know that dogs don’t need veggies and grains really and i am going to feed them based on a prey-model diet

It means exactly what it says – you feed 2 – 3% of the dog’s ideal body weight daily. If your dog should weight 80 pounds, you feed 2 – 3% of 80 every day.

And you need to do your own research as to where to buy meat. Check with butchers, put ads in the paper, check out grocery stores, etc.

You really need to be doing a lot of research to be sure you’re doing it correctly. Google it to get detailed info, maybe join a group of raw feeders to learn all there is to learn.

Should I put my Dog on the raw food Diet?

We have an English Mastiff who is 11 mo old. My husband is 100% up for it. Will it positivlvy benefit our pup?

Before making a decision to do raw, you need to do a LOT of research! There are several ways you can go, from total raw, to a percentage, to make your own, to store bought/pre-packaged raw.

I would worry about putting a large breed puppy on it, however. I have a 10 month old that we switched to raw, and he got pano. We switched him back, and he’s been fine. We might try switching him again when he’s older.

It takes committment, and it takes education on the topic. You have to make sure that your dog’s diet is TOTALLY balanced!

Does anyone feed dog/cat raw food diet? Should I buy it from the grocery store?

You are supposed to feed whole parts of animals and the grocery stores usually debone most meats. Is ok to buy a T-bone steak and give to my dog?
The T-bone was just an example but, thanx for the help. I will start out on chicken and I have done tons of research but most sites fail to give you advice on where to get the whole meats. My guess is a butcher, I’ll have to look into that.
I’m sorry but anyone that believes that raw diets are bad, is very uneducated or manipulated by dog food companies.
Most health problems in pets are caused by dry kibble. My cat is dying of hyperthyroidism as we speak caused by cat food. I will not let this happen to the rest of my babies.
RAW BONES ESPECIALLY CHICKEN DO NOT CHOKE DOGS! They are soft and very good for them. Only cooked bones harden and splinter.

I’ve been feeding raw for a couple of years now, you definitely need to do your research first.
that said, I only buy some of my food at the grocery store. I buy my veggies there, I put them thru the food processor, mix with pumpkin and freeze in large yogurt containers. I also buy yogurt, plain, in large containers, eggs (I give 1perdogperweek), canned fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines, what ever is cheapest), also bananas and apples. I keep an eye out for deals on meat, I usually feed chicken, yes, bone and all, but I have found some meat shops that now do meat for raw feeders, you can buy the carcas of a chicken, or get them ground, I buy by the case and freeze. I will by gound beef when on sale, and package up for daily use. Raw feeders should get organ meat 2 or 3 times a week, so I watch for deals here too, have found I can get turkey hearts at one of the farmers markets I go to so I buy in bulk and again freeze in baggies for the amount I need. Periodically I will pick up a kidney, beef heart or tongue. It sounds like a lot of work, but once you get the hang of it it isn’t. A good freezer is essential. You can buy commerically prepared raw, fine if you only have one small dog, but as I have more and they are larger I do it myself.
always use human grade meat. Beef bones are too hard to be part of the meals, but I use beef ribs for their recreational bones, they love them and you don’t run the risk of getting a knuckle bone caught on the jaws.
For special treats I will feed ox tail or turkey necks. You will find that dogs love it.
I do use vitamin supplements- which I did when I fed kibble, vit C & E (antioxidants for cancer prevention), kelp (good for pigment, I have show dogs, and iodine for thyroid health).
good luck, but again, do your research first

We would all like to think that we are feeding our dog the best food possible. It should not matter whether it is canned food or dry food with plenty of water available, it should be the best, but it?

When you look to see what’s included, there are clauses, such as meat and animal derivatives. This term means that the animal protein, but not specific in that the meat comes from, that can come from any part of the animal. This means that the meat could be the most cheap as possible, so the manufacturer is. It’s just that there is no way, as owners, we know the real source of derivatives. Similar derivatives of vegetable origin in some dog food. Again, this can cover a range of things, just do not know.

Then we have the words permitted additives. The word can they say it’ll be fine, but will it? Some dog foods contain derivatives that have been banned for human consumption, due to ill health, such as the E110 and E102. Who are we, the owners, to learn facts like that is acceptable and what is not?

The poor quality protein also are used, so this can include using soy instead of real meat. This may be more difficult to digest and much less suitable for dog meat proteins real. Should we just accept everything that is placed on the shelves of supermarkets?

If the answer is no, then what can we, as owners to do about it. Be vigilant is the best answer. Always read the label on the can or bag and know what to feed your dog.

Real food for pets should made, to the extent possible, with natural ingredients, pure and simple. No additives or other derivatives of questionable. Dogs and other pets, they deserve food that is made of good quality natural ingredients. Food that is free of preservatives, such as colors or flavorings. Manufacturers also must be honest and detail all the ingredients used, in clear and plain language, without hiding behind the words and numbers Generalized E.

Some people use a diet called BARF (Bones and Raw Food) diet. This is where the owner of the dog food is prepared fresh, daily, using a mixture of raw meats, vegetables, cereals cooked, nuts and fruits, vitamin supplements and minerals, essential fatty acids, raw bones for calcium, eggs, milk and milk products. This can apparently a response, but as well as having many positive, some negative aspects too. So it can not be the answer.

It is really down the owner of the individual to do your due diligence in deciding what is best for your own dog after reading the labels carefully. If your dog is fit and healthy, so feed them, you only need careful monitoring is all that.

Feline urinary tract infections are increasing. They can be treated, but rather, to be preventable. One of the most common reasons for feline tract lower urinary (Disease FLUTD) is what your cat eats. A diet low in protein, carbohydrates and too heavy and high in magnesium may result in the creation of urinary tract infection. Good quality cat food for urinary health certainly exists, but not the food you buy your kitten now provide that?

Unfortunately, the typical commercially produced cat food you buy in the supermarket is full of fillers, processed grains, dyes and additives food. Processed cat food can be harmful to the health of your kitten. So what's wrong with the (garbage, frankly) that often feed your cat? Check the label and see some of the ingredients that are not healthy for your little feline. For example, processed grains may have an adverse effect on pH of urine the cat, and essentially to promote the growth of bacteria. Dyes, additives and other chemicals are not good for the digestive tract of your cat's delicate.

The challenge is to find a cat food for urinary health will also be attractive to its kitty, contains the right amount of protein and magnesium and have little or no derivatives. If you need to find an alternative cat food, urinary tract infections is a problem, then consider the following when choosing cat food.

The best cat food for urinary health is one that is high in moisture content and mostly based on meat. Have you noticed how infrequently your cat views cup water? This is natural for a cat, as they have evolved to get most of their water from their food. So far as possible avoid dry foods making chronic low-level dehydration in cats. In the past, the ash content was the main focus of formulas specifically formulated for health urine, but more recently, animal professionals have concluded that hydration levels are of primary importance in preventing FLUTD.

If you need to wean your cat dry food, try adding a little water to the food itself, as the extra moisture will help maintain the correct levels pH in urine, without having to alter the mineral content of foods. If necessary, the mixing of food with their kibble wet, slowly increasing the amount of food moist until completely weaned from the dry areas. You can also try to give your meat with their croquettes, slowly decreasing the amount of dry food you are serving. Try different meats and different flavors of canned food.

Since your cat will get a ton of good food nutrition you are now feeding it generally means eating less than she usually does. If you feel you have the means to make the food quality cat, and then find a packaged food is organic and contains no added chemicals, food colors or fillers. Be willing to pay extra for such high quality food. But remember, it's better to spend money on your pet will not, your vet!

    Supplements

Give your kitten some daily supplements serve to enhance the protection, support and maintain bladder health. These additions are not necessarily expensive. and save the cost of a veterinary visit.

Vitamin C is essential because it is a natural antioxidant that fights cancer and reduces inflammation. Cranberry juice – cranberry or a supplement, because it is more acceptable to your cat – stops the growth of bacteria in the bladder lining.

Another crucial step is to give your cat a remedy homeopathic, designed in particular to the health of the bladder. Since all homeopathic remedies are not the same rules, take a little time, make some research and look for a supplement that has proven ingredients such as uva ursi, Berberis and Cantharis.

    Water

This does not Needless to say, you must make sure your cat has always healthy, clean water, but the guardians of the cat is not well known chemicals in tap water is not good for the cats. Always give your pet water filtered.

The best cat food for urinary tract health and maintenance is exactly the sort of food we’d like to eat for ourselves – natural, organic, and unadulterated with chemicals and unnecessary additives. raw food pet diets

The pet food recall of 2007 has brought an enormous amount of attention to pet food. With tens of thousands of animals affected by the withdrawal and death of thousands of tainted pet food (see PetConnection database) is not at all surprising that we have questions. What is surprising is that it takes all of us so long to ask these questions.

What have we been feeding our pets all these years? We all, including veterinarians, as I trusted the pet food business altogether. We believed that our pets have always maintained – and our – best interests for the heart. But in the case of large multinational pet food, apparently not.

What we supply has been clearly not been the best for our pets. What we have seen life expectancy is shorter, more disease, cancer and more – no pets healthy. Although genetics play a role, our Pets can be like us. Garbage in .. You know the result.

Ethics of pet food companies aside, the last question to be answer is: what is the best food we can feed our pets? Where diets feed source, or there are companies that still can be trusted? And what about raw food diets of origin?

The answer quickly and easily, regardless of what you choose to do, is this: be informed. Be informed, educated pet owner and know what you're feeding your pet. You are the guardian of your pet. You know your pet better than anyone, including your veterinarian. Your pet's health is ultimately your responsibility – and that definitely includes what you feed your pet.

If you feed diets home, you know clearly the ingredients, and can find the primary sources of food that you buy. If you feed processed foods (canned or croquettes), make sure to know what really happens in that food. Make sure you know very well the company – they have reliable sources of their ingredients, and can prove it.

The other consideration, and I'm hearing this a lot lately, is the simplicity and convenience. The main reason for prepared pet foods became popular in the first place was for convenience. Many of dogs and feline diets you see tend to be rather complicated, and this scares many pet owners away.

I have also heard many pet owners expressed concern about the diets of house they want to ensure that they are 'nutritionally balanced'. And although this is a consideration, the truth is that no is elusive.

And again, what about raw food diets? Raw foods and all of the concerns apparent (founded or unfounded) are definitely the subject of another article entirely, but it's definitely something I recommend to some degree. So where does this leave us?

Ideally, I'd recommend a change to a diet of origin, either raw or cooked. You have the most control (again, as we trust our own sources supply) on the ingredients. You see, every day, exactly what you are feeding their pets.

However, the ideal is not always the most practical for many pet owners. There is also a consideration of the transition of the entire package to the preparation of food to biscuits house. Many pet owners are unsure of how to prepare food properly, especially when it comes to raw foods.

A great way to start, and this is what I'm doing now is to feed a combination of diets of origin and packaging Kibble. Again, make sure the company is confident that produces packaged food – Do your own research! But I have found that this works well for most pet owners. Start with a diet of home you feel comfortable with feeding and once or twice a week, and go from there. To my pets, I feed a homemade diet and preparation, pre-frozen raw food diet. My dog and cat, both love their new diets and are performing very well.

The other benefit of doing a combination that you are providing a varied diet, I definitely recommend something now. No single food – packaging or otherwise – that will be perfect for all pets. By varying the diet nutritional imbalances are composed of a pet can experience a particular diet or another.

Allowances for home, I have several available on my site, "Dr. Andrew Jones Inner Circle" theonlinevet – please see link in my biography.
